Hey everyone! We put together a general matchmaking FAQ here for our new ranked system to help answer questions you may have. For general description of this new system, please refer to our Year of the Phoenix blog. If you want to learn some basic concepts of matchmaking, here is our previous blog about matchmaking in Battlegrounds. When your star bonus multiplier is bigger than 1, or you are in Legend rank, you are generally in the first matchmaking pool; when your star bonus drops to 1, you are in the second pool.
Ranked match is a kind of game that allows players to boost (or decrease) their MMR Dota value, depending on their results. Ranked matches.
Earlier today, Valve released a small patch which saw the addition of stats for Neutral items. A welcome quality of life chance, but then players started reporting a weird bug – they automatically gained or lost thousands of MMR points. From what we can tell, players who finished the match when Dota 2 coordinator was offline or right after the patch was released, are the ones who are primarily affected by this issue.
If their last game ended with a victory, they gained thousands of MMR. If they lost, they lost the same amount. Many have theorized that this is due to the server trying to process matchmaking data, over and over again but ultimately failing. Each time an iteration was run, MMR was distributed. Valve has not commented on the bug. The MMR shifts that have occurred due to this bug will likely be reversed by the game when they fix this issue.
Introducing Role Queue
Weighted Average is a blend of the average of all players, then skews that average to the highest-ranked player in the party. A party of similarly ranked players will have a Party Skill close to their average rating. Party Skill will now be weighted closer to the skill of the highest-ranked player in the group than in previous Seasons. Why is this necessary?
The new matchmaking algorithm will be finding its way to ranked queues in early preseason to avoid major impact to ranked MMR during the.
Valve has changed the Dota 2 ranked role matchmaking system once again. The latest update removed separate core and support ranks and merged them back into a single rank. It sounds like the good old days. But they also added something new. The matchmaking system will use your full MMR when a player queues for their best roles. But when they queue for weaker ones, the matchmaking system will place them into lower MMR matches.
For example, a player who predominately plays support roles might have an Ancient III badge. But when they queue core roles, their badge level will be reduced to Legend III. But the difference is that no matter which role they queue for and play, the result of the match will impact the same single MMR value rather than two different ones. Lately, it seems like matchmaking system changes happen every couple of months. And it always leaves players asking the same question: Will the changes lower my current MMR?
Thankfully, the answer is no. At least, not significantly anyway. There has been a mixed response on Reddit.
Valorant won’t have ranked on launch
Dota 2 has an excellent method of ranking the players who take part in the ranked matchmaking. Valve has implemented multiple methods to observe the new players and how they perform to open a specific number for them. Once you receive your number that is also known as MMR, every ranked match you play, it either increases or decreases. Apart from this, several players complain that it is really hard to increase the MMR as most of them get stuck in a specific bracket of MMR.
These complaints originate from the lowest MMR bracket. It is really hard to find good teammates in the low MMR bracket and you have to present a one-man show in order to win the games.
After that some players, that mmr visible. Each team said; the new dota 2 ranked matchmaking. Six months have the official release date today. Does the release.
The next major update will add a ranked matchmaking feature to the game. This mode is aimed at experienced players who want to play in a more competitive environment and know their matchmaking rating MMR. Dota 2 matchmaking has always calculated MMR and used it to form matches; in ranked matchmaking we make that MMR visible. Dota 2 uses standard techniques to quantify and track player skill.
We assign each player an MMR, which is a summary metric that quantifies your skill at Dota 2. After each match, we update your MMR based on what happened in that match. We also track our uncertainty about your MMR. New accounts and those playing in Ranked Matchmaking for the first time have high uncertainty. Higher uncertainty allows larger adjustments after each match, and lower uncertainty leads to smaller adjustments. Together, the MMR and uncertainty can be interpreted as a probability distribution of performance in your next game; the MMR itself serves as the mean of this distribution and the uncertainty is its standard deviation.
How do the MMR system and the ranks work in Dota 2? There are no official statements from Valve nowadays, so I made the work and researched a lot to write this long guide. There might be still mistakes or things that change over time — I will keep the post updated, comment below if something needs to be corrected! This guide is for Dota 2 beginners.
Even after the competitive ladder is unlocked, your unrated matchmaking and match scores will not affect your competitive placement. Once these.
The new Ranked season is here. The changes in this update will be rolled out gradually over the next two days as we iron out bugs. The calibration part of the new season will begin this Thursday. One big observation that we had since the previous update was that matches with misaligned roles had a meaningful impact on game quality. An example of this is when the mid player for one team has the highest rank on their team, and the mid player on the other team has the lowest rank.
This tended to cause games to be really volatile and not enjoyable. In the past we used to prioritize rank spread between the two teams as one of the main criteria for the matchmaker to judge success, however as part of this update we are changing its priorities. It will now put a big emphasis on making sure that the roles are more symmetric rather than other criteria.
To help ensure everyone plays the role they queued for, this update includes a role report function during the drafting and beginning minutes of the game. Some baseline dota skills and knowledge are shared between the Support and Core roles.

Dota 2 seasonal rank distribution based on the data of millions of players. The MMR by medal is an estimate and is constantly adjusted. Updated to the last season. I have been asked numerous times about the current rank distribution in Dota 2. The following dataset has the purpose to create a plausible MMR distribution by collecting data from as many players as possible. With over 3 million season 4 5 million season 3 , 6 million season 2 , and 5 million season 1 players analyzed, we can consider this distribution very realistic.
I will update the data monthly, so we will have an idea on how the rank distribution evolves over time, and if there is any change. Season 1. Season 2. Season 3.
Dota 2 Gets Big Experimental Changes to Ranked Matchmaking
The Role Queue system is designed to help take the edge off this process, ultimately leading to matches that feel fairer and more fun, where players are in roles that they want to be in. The matchmaking system will then match two tanks, two supports, and two damage heroes to create a team, and upon entering match, players will select heroes within their chosen roles. At the end of a match in both Competitive Play and Quick Play , players will return to the main menu and select their role before queuing for the next game.
Each of the three roles will have its own queue, and players will be able to see estimates for the wait time for each at the role-selection screen.
Your ranked MMR is going to be reset, but the 20 match requirement isn’t. We’ll probably carry over some (maybe all) of your unrated MMR to.

This led to situations where two teammates were autofilled into each others’ primary or secondary roles.
In Premade Parity: Similar to Autofill Parity, Premade Parity strives to make matches with an equal number of premades on each side.
